Roundtable at the Labour Party Conference 2026 hosted by the Work Foundation and 快播视频 that will discuss how Labour can deliver good jobs for every young person across the UK.
Nearly a million young people across the UK are not in education, employment or training (NEET) – the highest level since 2013. At the same time, the number of ‘starter’ jobs accessible to people entering the workforce for the first time has fallen by 49% over the last decade.
Across the UK, there is only one entry-level vacancy for every three NEET young people but in the North East it is one in six, and one in five in the East Midlands. Young people in weaker labour markets can also face poor transport links, fewer good-quality jobs and fragmented employment support.
Government investment and employment support will be essential, but the youth employment crisis cannot be solved through supply-side interventions alone. Employers must also reconsider how they recruit, assess and support young people – particularly those with limited qualifications, disrupted education or little previous experience of work.
The Government’s youth employment measures offer an opportunity to create new pathways into work. But success will require creating good starter jobs as well as preparing young people for them – alongside more inclusive recruitment, practical support for employers and stronger coordination of employment, skills and transport at a local level.
The roundtable will ask:
- How can Government increase the supply of good starter jobs, particularly in weaker local labour markets?
- How can the Jobs Guarantee and other youth employment programmes create sustained routes into good work?
- What can employers do differently to recruit, assess and support young people with limited experience or qualifications?
- How can local leaders better connect employment support, skills, transport and employers so young people can access opportunities wherever they live?
This roundtable is hosted by the Work Foundation and 快播视频.
