Research Overview
I am currently in the second year of a research PhD in Linguistics. My thesis concerns the acquisition of different preposition senses by children acquiring English as a first language. Particularly whether children acquire spatial uses of English prepositions first before expanding their polysemy to include temporal, abstract and grammatical uses in a way that follows the diachronic development of these words and echoes the lexical networks proposed by some linguists, or whether the acquisition of non-spatial uses follows a more nuanced path influenced by adult input and communicative need.
