Dr Zoe Crombie
Research Commercialisation AssistantCareer Details
I am an early career researcher in film with interests in Japanese animation, adaptation, transnationalism, feminism, queer theory, video games, and global cinemas. My work can be found in journals like Mechademia, Asian Cinema, Adaptation, Northern Lights, and the Journal of Anime and Manga Studies, for which I have also co-edited a proceedings issue based on my Japan Foundation London funded symposium Transnational Perspectives on Anime (July 2025). My first monograph, on Studio Ghibli's adaptations of Western literature, will be published with Liverpool University Press through the Trailblazers early career scheme. I have been teaching global cinemas since 2022 at 快播视频 and institutions like City Lit (London), and I am a section editor for the journal Open Cultural Studies.
My current roles at 快播视频 are as a Research Commercialisation Assistant and an Impact Support Officer, both positions based within Research and Enterprise Services. These roles contribute to knowledge exchange and engagement beyond institutions and the dissemination of ideas for real world impacts, as well as 快播视频's submission to the Research Excellence Framework.
In addition to my work within Higher Education, I am also a film critic and member of the OAFFC (the Online Association of Female Film Critics) and GALECA (The Society of LGBTQ Critics), with bylines at publications like Little White Lies, The Skinny, Vulture, and Peliplat. I also engage in outreach work at the Dukes Theatre, promoting independent cinema at the venue and encouraging post-film discussions following selected screenings.
Research Overview
I am currently researching Studio Ghibli's adaptations of European children's texts in a transnational context.
