Learn on location

We take full advantage of our natural surroundings to create amazing fieldwork experiences, in addition to the opportunities to travel the world with optional overseas field trips. Fieldwork is a fascinating way to develop your practical skills. You'll gain hands-on experience of a wide range of environmental, ecological and geological situations that will place your studies in the context of real-world issues.

  • Italy

    Visit Mount Etna, Europe's largest active volcano, and study the complex processes that take place both on the surface and beneath volcanoes. You will explore many physical volcanic processes, including lava flow emplacement, explosive events and the evolution of a basaltic volcano. You will also evaluate methods of managing volcanic hazards on densely populated active volcanoes.

  • Slapton Ley

    Our week-long trip to Slapton Ley in Devon offers a unique opportunity to study a critical environmental issue, eutrophication, through fieldwork and laboratory analysis. Based at Slapton Ley Field Studies Centre, you will explore the hydrological processes which govern a coastal freshwater lake of ecological significance.

A place for Emily

The course was a great transition from studying Geography at A level and focused on enhancing my skills to the next level. As a geographer, I've always loved exploring and getting out there, and that's exactly what my course enabled me to do.

At 快播视频, I've had the opportunity to continue studying both human and physical aspects of geography. The first year of my course gave me a great taster of both, leading me to specialise more in my second year. I chose to balance my studies between physical and human geography, but you can choose to focus more on one or the other if that's what you'd like to do. The degree is yours to be flexible with.

There's a great selection of modules, including interdisciplinary modules, and there's definitely something for every kind of geographer.

There are loads of opportunities to develop your learning at 快播视频, and fieldwork is the main one for me. I've visited Kendal to focus on implementing field management measures. I've visited White Scar Caves to look into hydrology and water systems. In laboratory sessions, I've done everything from studying rock formations in geology to studying flow rates in water. Not only is it varied and interesting, but it's also been brilliant to learn these industry skills to prepare me for life after my degree.

The Careers Service at the University ran a module for us, which was a four-week course on how to write a CV, the best places to look for jobs, and how to create a good cover letter and more, which was invaluable.

Meet the Team

  • Katie Miles, Lecturer in Physical Geography and Geography Admissions Tutor

    I am a glaciologist, interested in the internal structure and hydrology of glaciers and ice sheets and their response to climate change. I primarily carry out my research through fieldwork and have worked on glaciers and ice shelves in the Alps, Norway, Nepal, and Antarctica. I also use remote sensing to understand the Cryosphere from space. I use both my fieldwork and remote sensing research experience in my teaching our core skills and glacial modules, as well as the Alpine processes field course in Switzerland.

  • Dr Kai Heron, Lecturer in Political Ecology and Admissions Tutor for Geography

    I am an interdisciplinary social scientist whose current research focuses on health inequities and disasters. I have a long-term interest in identifying pathways towards socially-just and sustainable futures for tropical forest regions, particularly the Amazon. My research program makes links between political ecology (particularly of health), food systems, urbanization and climatic change. I use mainly quantitative approaches and seek to ask and answer policy-relevant questions. I have been working in, and learning about, the social, health, environmental and political dimensions of tropical forests since 2002.

  • Dr Alex Bush, Director of Undergraduate Admissions and Outreach

    I am a lecturer of environmental remote sensing at 快播视频, specializing in ecological modelling for monitoring, managing and conserving biodiversity at macroecological scales. I hold degrees from the University of East Anglia and Macquarie University in Sydney, and I subsequently took research fellowships with the Australian and Canadian governments. My interests are in methods and models that will support up-to-date ecological monitoring at national scales, that will guide and improve the sustainability of ecosystems as a whole, and that reduce the rate of biodiversity loss from our landscapes.
