Rafael Savva
Lecturer in Law - EU Law (Teaching & Scholarship)Profile
Rafael specialises in EU and UK corporate and securities law, with a particular focus on how these frameworks can promote corporate governance and business practices that advance sustainable development. His research examines how law shapes corporate behaviour to ensure that companies actively contribute to - or at minimum do not undermine - long-term environmental, social, and economic objectives.
His work explores the evolving relationship between corporate regulation and sustainable development, including the role of investor stewardship in driving responsible business conduct, the influence of competing governance theories on corporate and securities law, and the development of regulatory mechanisms designed to embed sustainable development goals in corporate practice. He also investigates how corporate and securities law intersect with other legal domains, such as business and human rights, to support more holistic approaches to corporate accountability.
Rafael’s research has been published in leading academic journals and edited collections, and presented at international conferences. His recent work focuses on the regulatory drivers of corporate sustainability and the changing dynamics of shareholder engagement. In addition to his academic research, he advises practitioners and organisations on matters relating to corporate law and sustainable development.
Alongside his research, Rafael is deeply committed to teaching and mentoring future legal professionals. He teaches modules on company law, corporate governance, and regulation, emphasising the real-world impact of legal frameworks on sustainable business practice. His teaching approach combines critical analysis with experiential learning — including game-based simulations and Virtual Reality (VR) environments — to help students understand how law can shape more sustainable corporate behaviour.
