'To See and Be Seen' in the City: Mapping Urban Experience through London Ego Documents c. 1660-1690
Research Overview
The project investigates key aspects of the social and spatial history of Restoration London by studying a corpus of select diaries to chart their authors’ everyday experiences. To undertake this work, I have developed an integrated methodology that combines close textual reading with digital approaches, including GIS mapping, to explore individuals’ experiences of their urban environment and what they reveal about London’s spatial and social structures during a period of extraordinary expansion and political upheavals. By extracting textual, statistical, and geographical data from the diaries, the project builds databases that, along with visualisation, enhance the interpretation of complex spatial relationships and allow us to move from abstract ideas about space to a new topography of the capital.
Research Interests
My main interests are early modern British history, Italian Renaissance history, spatial history, and the use of digital humanities in historical research. Apart from this, I have a keen interest in spy networks, theatres, and playwrights, especially Kit Marlowe. My background is in public history and heritage, I love working with historic built environment and early modern architecture.
